Unify America is a nonpartisan nonprofit on a mission to transform our politics through practical problem solving.

We have a vision for leveraging cooperative problem solving to address the most intractable problems at the local, state, and federal levels of government.  For too long, our politics has been polarized and paralyzed and impeded the ability of elected officials to make a real difference for the people they represent.  We are bringing legislators and citizens together to discover shared solutions to address shared goals.

Unify America is seeking a Chief Deliberations Officer (CDO), a top-level leader to promote this vision and help us build a movement for hope and change.  We need someone of impeccable integrity and character to advocate our public service mission.  We are looking for a strategist, ambassador, and team-builder to establish a network among potential partners and implement a robust series of meetings, conferences, and demonstrations to advance our agenda.

The CDO will guide the testing, iterating, operationalizing and scaling of Unify America’s model for efficient, cooperative and informed decision-making to transform our legislative processes at every level of government.  The ideal candidate will have legislative-liaison experience or will have worked with or for an elected official at any level.  The CDO will direct group activities and experiments of ever greater scale, hire and coordinate staff with a broad range of talents, and oversee the logistics of deliberative decision-making among hundreds (and at some point hundreds of thousands) of American citizens.

Vital to our Democracy

Through several trials and demos, Unify America has already shown that the vast majority of Americans (over 90%) share many of the same goals for the country.  Political factions appear polarized over gun control legislation, but we’ve found that gun control isn’t the goal, it’s a tactical lightning rod that quickly derails the conversation.  In fact, most Americans are interested in reducing violence, a shared goal that has the potential of moving the conversation forward.  We don’t realize that for most political issues we’re just arguing about tactics or allowing personalities and misinformed perceptions to stifle the conversation. Or less productively, we’re arguing about nothing at all; we’re merely asserting our hardened, irrational partisan identities.

Typically, political decision-making begins with some group walking in with their solution. Then there is a fight about it. Then we hope a compromise emerges that serves the common good.  That is a poor approach to decision-making. Knowing that we have shared goals, we can address an urgent need in our democracy by creating, implementing and institutionalizing a process by which we can find shared solutions together. Unify America’s vision is rooted in the Deliberative Democracy movement, which has been successfully bringing citizens together in pockets all around the world for more than 40 years. It’s time to bring Deliberative Democracy into the national consciousness.

An Essential Role

If this role as CDO is for you, you will recruit, build, and lead “a team of teams” to make a Unify Deliberation happen. One team will work with legislators, another will work with the community. Other teams you’ll form will be responsible for research and fact checking, developing solutions, handling logistics, and managing the deliberation itself. You’ll be supported by Unify America’s staff in marketing, legal, finance, communications, product development, and technology. Unify America will also form an Anti-Sabotage team and advisory group that will work to defend the integrity of each deliberation from being undermined by outside forces.
